This is the time of year that many of us become nostalgic about Christmas gone by. I am no exception. I have chosen to share with you a picture of a painting (name of original painter unknown) which depicts country folks/farmers (or as we know them on the island, jibaritos) celebrating a traditional Puerto Rican Christmas. The photo shows the jibaritos singing Christmas songs, with traditional instruments (most likely a classic guitar and a cuatro) right outside of a small, wooden house. I could just about smell the roasted pig . . . YUM! The picture probably depicts a traditional Christmas celebration around the turn of the 20th Century. However, many of these customs are still celebrated in much the same way on the island today.
No matter how or where you celebrate this holiday season I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
